Hi!,
My name is Bobbi and I am the webmaster of bleeding earth. This site is all about the environment, endangered species, habitat conservation, actions you can take to help and ways to live more in harmony with nature. In addition you will be seeing some beautiful pictures of animals and nature. But, please be warned that sometimes there will also be heart wrenching pictures and accounts about animals or locations that are suffering because of the foolishness of our approach to the Earth and the species inhabiting it.
I do not think it is out of bounds to say we are in an environmental crisis of major proportions. All one needs to do is look at the dire situation in the Gulf of Mexico to see the harm we are doing. Now we need to find out what we can do about it.
I sincerely believe that time is of the utmost importance and we must do as much as possible to restore what we , as a species have damaged. If we cannot restore something then we must do the next best thing which is to prevent further damage to an already fragile ecosystem.
I am in my sixties and in just my lifetime I have seen the sky over our cities go brown with pollution and the clear water of our streams turn foggy with chemical pollutants. I have always loved the outdoors and being close to nature. However, twenty three years ago I suffered a stroke that left me unable to use my left arm. Then ten years ago I fell ill with a blood infection that left no choice but amputation of my left leg below the knee.
These two things, plus the fact that I am no longer exactly young, left me without the stamina I once enjoyed. So long hikes in the mountains, camping under the stars and making brave but probably foolhardy attempts to surf were no longer things with which I could occupy myself.
I began to read about the things that were going on in the environment and I was very disturbed at what I learned. From drowning our soil in chemicals we have poisoned our food. From our selfish and constant demand for more and more we have filled our air with emissions from automobiles and other motorized vehicles to the point that many of us have lung problems from breathing polluted air. From our wanton use of plastics and other things that will not biodegrade we have polluted our oceans to an almost unrecognizable level.
Needless to say, I felt helpless. Then I started to write a blog about animals and rescuing abandoned pets. It filled my days with something I seemed able to do to help. Now that blog has morphed to be almost entirely about petitions and actions to take to help environmental causes. Although many of them are about animals, I didn’t want fluffyfeet.net to become an environmental blog and thereby short change the pets it was intended to help in the first place.
Therefore, I started bleeding earth as a place for others like myself to go and take action or just simply learn about our planet and what is happening to it. My hope is that by banding together we can make our voices heard for change and a common sense approach to mending the problems we have caused.
I will do my best to inform, you must do your best to follow through on petitions and contacts with those in the government who set policy. I hold no delusions that this site will become large and have a big impact. But I also remember the old thing about rolling a snowball downhill and how it grows until it is huge. So I will keep putting it out there and see how far this little snowball gets.
Hey, I may be getting on in years and I may no longer have all of the parts I came into this world possessing, but I still hope and I still believe.
