Florida Sea Levels to Rise
avatar

Florida sea levels are going to rise. When you live only a foot or so above sea level this means much of Florida will be adversely affected and many people will lose their way of life and possibly their homes. That Florida sea levels are going to rise is not fear mongering. The rise of Florida sea levels is environmental and climate change reality.

By Fred Grimm for the Miami Herald;

A sobering study released by Florida Atlantic University contemplated the effects of global warming in specific terms, particularly for South Florida, considered one of the more vulnerable metropolitan areas in the world, with six million residents clustered by the ocean, living barely above sea level.

The study from FAU’s Center for Urban and Environmental Solutions, adding to an overwhelming scientific consensus about the disastrous effects of global warming, and along with growing hard evidence that temperature changes are already altering the environment, ought to have sent tremors through the halls of government.

Except it didn’t. Perhaps the most peculiar phenomenon associated with global warming has been a burgeoning disdain for climate science even as scientific consensus grows more urgent. Forget the stickier question of whether global warming has been fueled by human activity (as an overwhelming percentage of climate scientists believe), a poll by the Pew last year found that only 59 percent of Americans will even acknowledge the earth is warming, compared to 79 percent just five years ago.

This peculiarly American phenomenon comes despite a decade of record high temperatures. And despite findings of a sustained global temperature increase from NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the Hadley Centre in England, and, just last week, the University of California’s Berkeley Earth project, which compiled more than a billion temperature records dating back to the 1800s from 15 sources around the world.

So how does anyone or anything convince these people they need to prepare for and expect to see these changes coming in the not to distant future? How do we make them see that Florida sea levels really are going to rise? I don’t see any way to get through to them unless and until the news resources they pay attention start to give these poor souls the true information.

The big money funded climate deniers aren’t going to do what is sensible and right in the near future. So,it is left up to relatives, friends and concerned groups to convince these people they are in danger.  Especially in the south of the state where the rise of Florida sea levels will inundate much of the ground.

I know I will continue to support a green lifestyle, reduction of carbon footprints and the need for clean energy sources.  However, I do find it sad that a group of Americans is willing to put other Americans at risk for corporate profit and short-term political gain.

Regardless of who benefits in the short term, all of us are going to suffer in some way from climate change in the long term. We are being warned again and again by scientists that this change is coming. We are watching native species move to higher ground to get into cooler areas. We are bearing witness to a huge die off of animals and plants. We are watching as parts of continents and many islands are overrun with water.

All of these things and more are happening now. Yet a segment of the population refuses to see what is right in front of their eyes.  In fact, they make excuses and stay willfully ignorant as our environment slips further and further past any hope of recovery.  Florida sea levels will rise and the planet will get warmer.

From Yahoo News dot com;

“Large parts of Eurasia, North Africa and Canada could potentially experience individual five-year average temperatures that exceed the 2 degree Celsius threshold by 2030 — a timescale that is not so distant,” the paper said.

Two years ago, industrialized nations set a 2 degree Celsius warming as the maximum limit to avoid dangerous climate changes including more floods, droughts and rising seas, while some experts said a 1.5 degree limit would be safer.

It is widely agreed among scientists that global pledges so far for curbing greenhouse gas emissions are not strong enough to prevent “dangerous” climate change.

Perhaps because I have been a lifelong observer of animals and nature, I see things that others may not notice.  I know the sky is not as blue as it once appeared and I know some of my favorite animals are now on the verge of extinction.  These animals have lost so much of their habitat and the environment has changed so drastically they no longer fit into the new man-made order.

Seriously people, time is running faster than we are moving to prevent environmental catastrophe. Please take any action you can to help prevent this man-made disaster.  Being as green as possible is very important.  It is also important to contact your elected representatives and tell them you want action on global warming and climate change.

The last thing is register to vote and support candidates who support the environment, regardless of party affiliation.  If you don’t want to do these things for yourself, at least do them for the generations to come. If we do not there might be far fewer of those generations than we had hoped.

We are responsible for much of the planet's environmental problem. For instance, The Deep Water Horizon is leaking into the Gulf of Mexico...again. I though that well was plugged. Isn't that what BP told us?

Oakland Zoo Saves Four Tigers
avatar

Beautiful, aren't they? They really do deserve freedom.

Where would you rather see a tiger live?

  1. In a cage in someones personal animal collection
  2. As a roadside or freak show attraction
  3. in a circus or carnival
  4. In an accredited zoo

I don’t like to see tigers or other wild animals penned up in any way, because I sincerely think they should live their lives in freedom and in their native habitat.

However, in our modern world  it is a sad but true fact tigers and other big cats are going extinct in the wild.  In fact, there are more tigers in the United States than there are in the wild. Over 8,000 tigers are in this country and only a few of them live at accredited zoos.  The rest are mainly trapped in small cages in backyards because someone bought a cute tiger cub and I guess they were too stupid to realize it would grow up to be one of the world’s top predators.

Many zoos don’t want to take the ‘pet’ tigers because they are mutts.  They are not pure Bengal Tiger, Sumatran Tiger or Siberian Tiger.  So they are not endangered and zoos consider them unsuitable for breeding.

So these mutt tigers spend their lives in cramped cages often without adequate food or water. They are often abused and teased and definitely die before their time.

From SFgate:

“There’s no way we could take just one,” said Erica Calcagno, an Oakland zookeeper who made the trek to Brownsville, Texas, where the tigers – all sisters – had been rescued from a roadside freak show.

“They’re gorgeous. Even when they’re sleeping they’re gorgeous. And we thought their story was an important one for us to tell.”

<snip>

So far, the frolicsome felines are the party girls of the zoo. On Tuesday the 6-year-old sisters chased each other through the grass, splashed in the pool and rolled on a wooden platform sprayed with their favorite scent, Calvin Klein’s Obsession.

But beyond entertaining visitors, zoo staff hopes the tigers serve a broader purpose: to educate the public about tiger mills.

<snip>

The sisters’ elderly tiger compatriot is also a rescue. She came to the zoo about 10 years ago from a circus. In fact, many of the animals at the Oakland Zoo are rescued from some less-than-ideal situation, said Colleen Kinzley, director of animal care, conservation and research.

“We feel this is such a critical issue,” she said. “We can’t come close to helping all the animals, but maybe we can sway public opinion a little bit.”

It is heart breaking to think of the lives the animals who are not rescued live.  However, The Oakland Zoo deserves a lot of credit for what they are doing. The faster we make all people aware of the plight of these big cats and other animals, the better.

We need the top predators in a wild environment to keep the ecosystem in balance. We need these animals, perhaps more than they need us.  We need to have a world where animals and humans can live together.

As much as we may need these things, climate change, chemicals and pollution are making it impossible to live on the earth.  The sooner we recognize this the better.  Let’s just hope we aren’t to late in getting the naysayers to come around. If we are, it may not be only the big cats that will disappear.  Humans will be going right along with them.

Rep Lost Over Climate Change
avatar

The United States Chamber of Commerce at one time commanded a lot of respect in the US. Now it appears to be losing that status very rapidly.  One of the main reasons for that loss is their battle against legislation  concerning climate change in both the US House and Senate.

The organization as a whole has come to stand for all that is wrong with the world’s largest organizations, corporations and financiers. They are hurting our environment by turning a deaf ear and a blind eye to the facts.

Following is a post from our sister sire lunacanus.com.  It will give you an idea how much the USCofC is losing because of their head in the sand attitude.  I hope they can be satisfied with all the money they have raked in. They certainly will be left with no reputation to fall back upon.

I hope you enjoy the post.

The Chamber of Commerce has proved to be anything but what its name indicates. That is unless you consider commerce to be conducted only by the biggest corporations in the world. The USCofC has been losing membership because of their stances on important issues of the day and their support of mega-corporations to the detriment of all other members.

One of the major reasons many corporations and businesses of conscience say they left the USCofC is the organizations attitude concerning climate change. There have also been a number of local chamber members who have broken their affiliation with the national USCofC over this issue as well.

From Fix the US Chamber;

The U.S. Chamber’s backwards stance on global warming can be traced to CEO Tom Donohue’s personal ties to the most backwards elements in the energy industry. Don Blankenship, chairman of Massey Energy where 29 coal miners died in April 2010, sits on the U.S. Chamber boardand publicly refers to climate legislation proponents as “greeniacs.” Donohue has also embraced the arguments of academic climate skeptics, many of whom are on the payrolls of coal and oil firms. “Is the science right? Is science not right? I don’t know,” Donohue told Politico.com in October 2009.

Only two months earlier, the U.S. Chamber’s senior vice president for environmental policy had called for a “Scopes monkey trial of the 21st century . . . It would be the science of climate change on trial.”

Although the public outcry forced the U.S. Chamber to quickly retract those inflammatory comments, the organization’s extremist stance triggered a spate of high-profile defections, including major utility companies like Exelon and Pacific Gas & Electric. “We would prefer that the Chamber take a more progressive stance on this critical issue and play a constructive role in addressing the climate crisis,” Apple Inc.’s chief of government relations said in a letter to Donohue when it quit the organization. “Apple supports regulating greenhouse gas emissions, and it is frustrating to find the Chamber at odds with us in this effort.” Other companies that have quit or rebuked the U.S. Chamber because of its lobbying against legislation to limit carbon emissions include PMN Resources, Nike, Johnson & Johnson and Mohawk Fine Papers.

Here is a list of major defectors from and denouncers of the USCofC;

You can now add Yahoo to this list.

From Politico;

Yahoo has quietly left the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, MT has learned. For Yahoo’s part, a spokeswoman would only say to MT that the company “has memberships with numerous trade associations and belongs to a number of organizations that promote a free and fair marketplace which enable Yahoo! to innovate on behalf of our more than 700 million users. As our membership renewal time neared and we reviewed our membership, we decided not to renew.”

Yahoo didn’t elaborate any further, and the Chamber said it does not comment on membership changes. But we know one thing for sure: The two didn’t see eye to eye on at least one issue. That’s the PROTECT IP Act, which the Chamber strongly supports and Yahoo greatly opposes. We’re following.

It is clear to see the USCofC needs to take a look at their practices. They are way behind the curve on climate change yet they pour large amounts into support of anti-environmental action by the House and Senate.

No wonder the USCofC has closed their doors in Washington DC for more than one day in 2011 because of protests in front of their building.  If they don’t get up to date soon they just might find themselves on the relic pile of history.  At this point the USCofC is fast heading there with no change in sight.

It is as if the USCofC is aiming a wrecking ball right at themselves. They are both blind and deaf to what is happening in the world.
